PLANT SITE AND QUARRY DEVELOPMENT ROADS
Another facet of the Holcim (US), Inc. was the plant site and quarry development roads. Holcim
asked Team BE to design haul roads for future quarry operations. Team BE was provided the
plant site footprint from Holcim and it was locked with regard to quantity of excavation to be
performed. All excavated material in the plant site was considered excess. Only cut was needed.
Team BE innovatively used the excess material in the design of quarry roads. This limited the length of hauling and reduced the amount of excavation in the actual quarry roads, therefore
reducing costs and gaining time.
This area of the project relied heavily on manpower and equipment. Double shifts were worked
for 10 months. Haul routes were long, over 2 1/2 miles in one direction. The area was all rock
excavation, with cuts in excess of 220 feet deep. Team BE needed to blast 2-4 times per day,
producing 40,000 to 60,000 cubic yards of shot rock per day. The largest single blast produced
75,000 cubic yards.
