WETLAND MITIGATION

Approximately 46 acres of wetland mitigation was developed to offset disturbance of existing
wetlands in the harbor areas. Topsoil in this area was stripped and stockpiled for reuse. It housed
natural wetland legumes that would spawn the growth of natural habitat. Work in this area was
concurrent with harbor construction and had to be completed at the same time as dredging.
Because it is on a river bank, it was up to Team BE to perform efficiently while the river was
down. Different depths and thicknesses of clay were designed to keep the water from leaking out
and the river water from pushing up and causing sand boils through the bottom.
