Bloomsdale Excavating was awarded the contract to construct 1.5 miles of new alignment of Interstate 44 in Phelps County, Missouri. This project included excavating one million cubic yards of earth and 800,000 cubic yards of rock, installation of drainage culverts, and laying 1.5 miles of superpave asphalt. Because this contract was based on a completion date instead of calendar days, it was Bloomsdale’s goal to complete this project ahead of schedule and minimize the impact to the traveling public. Additionally, there was an incentive/disincentive clause, which allotted a maximum of 10 days that the interstate traffic would travel on the temporary bypasses at the tie-in points and for any day under the 10 days Bloomsdale Excavating would obtain a daily $10,000 bonus (maximum of $100,000). Bloomsdale Excavating proposed an alternate traffic tie-in process eliminating the need for the temporary bypasses. The State of Missouri awarded Bloomsdale Excavating a $100,000 incentive bonus for minimizing the impact to the traveling public. This project was completed ahead of schedule and the intermediate milestone of turning traffic onto the new highway was completed two months ahead of schedule. “Bloomsdale Excavating is the prime contractor for MoDOT on the Interstate 44 project. This project, awarded on July 9, 2004, cost approximately $12 million to construct. The contractor began work on August 2, 2004. The contractor worked at an accelerated pace moving two million cubic yards of earth and laying 80,000 tons of asphalt. MoDOT would like to compliment Bloomsdale Excavating Company’s dedication to the pursuit of this project and opening all lanes before the Labor Day weekend.” Tom Stehn, District Engineer
